The place

When I arrived to the beautiful island of Sri Lanka it was 3 am and it was definitely an adventure. I had to take a train in Colombo, the capital city, and to get to the train station I took an Uber cab. (Not that I didn't want to take a local cab, but it is not the safest to do so at 3 am in the morning being alone). The driver even waited with me at the train station until my train had arrived.

The train ride in the first class compartment was beautiful and comfortable. There was air conditioning all the way. At one point I even started to become a bit cold.

I then finally arrived to the town of Midigama, where a tuk-tuk (some sort of three-wheel-motorcycle) took me to my house for the next days, the Senya Guest House. This house in the middle of the jungle is owned by a beautiful couple, Senerath and Yanuma.

The streets here in Midigama don't have what we know as a sidewalk. You most of the times walk on the side of the road trying to stay as far away as possible from the cars. After a few days you get used to it though.

The beach here is stunning. Midigama is a small town with a beautiful line coast and great left to surf (Lazy left). If you want to have something more touristic and with a great beach break to surf try Weligama. It is only 6 km away by tuk-tuk.

The food

Everything should be eaten with the right hand (if you are right-handed otherwise of course with your left hand), there usually is no tableware in Sri Linka.

For breakfast and sometimes for lunch there is one absolutely great dish on this side of the island: Egg hoppers! It consists in a "basket" made of rice flour and egg.

Egghopper

For lunch and dinner people usually eat another delicious dish called Dahl. They also like coconut chili curry, jackfruit curry and let’s not forget all the delicious chili sauces that go with the dishes. Furthermore Sri Lanka is also an island with an enormous amount of delicious fruit: papayas, mangos, bananas, pineapples among others.

The Fort of Galle

This stunning old fort saved the city center of Galle during the tsunami of 2012, so you can still walk around the beautiful streets of this town. Once you go to the fort you should enjoy a famous cup of Ceylon tea - something you definitely can't miss.

Also shopping here is fabulous, there is everything from gems to fashion. You can find traditional cotton Sarongs at the Barefoot shop or Sri lankan modern fashion at KK the collection Shop. Or if what you need is a massage, get one at the Galle Fort Spa.

If you would like to enjoy a romantic sundown at the beach. Try the Wijaya beach just a few minutes away by tuk-tuk from Galle.

In general, Sri Lankan people are really welcoming and friendly. There are some rules to follow at temples and non-touristic places. Shoes should be left outside of the houses and temples. And never show your back to a Buddha statue, NEVER!
